Surface and Subsurface Drainage

Most drainage problems are one of two things, and they need different fixes. Surface drainage moves water that is sitting on top of the ground: the puddle that never goes, the low corner of the yard, the driveway that sheets water at the garage door. That work is about grades, channels, pits and grates, getting the fall right so water leaves under its own weight.

Subsurface drainage deals with water already in the soil. Melbourne's clay holds it, and held water is what lifts paving, saturates footings and pushes on the back of a retaining wall. Agricultural drains, aggregate and a properly graded line take that water away before it does damage you cannot see from the surface.

Plenty of sites need both. Getting the diagnosis right first is the difference between a fix that lasts and a trench that has to be reopened next winter.

Nobody should be putting a machine in the ground without knowing what is already down there. Drain mapping records where the lines run, how deep they sit and which way they fall, so a site cut, a footing or a new trench does not go through a pipe that nobody knew about.

On an existing property, a survey answers the question people actually have: why is this drain not working. It shows whether the problem is a blockage, a break, a collapsed section or simply a line laid without enough fall. That decides whether the job is an hour's work or a day's, and it means the quote is based on the drain in front of us rather than a guess.

On a construction site, the same information keeps the program on track. A pipe found the hard way is a stop-work, a repair and a delay nobody costed for.

How a Drainage Job Runs

We come out and look at it. On a drainage job that visit matters more than most, because water problems are rarely where they appear to be, and a quote written from a phone description is a quote that changes later.

From there the sequence is usually the same: locate and survey the existing lines, agree what is being fixed and how, do the excavation and the pipework, test that the water goes where it is supposed to, then reinstate the surface. Because the same crew does the excavation, the drainage and the reinstatement, there is no waiting on another trade between stages and no argument about whose responsibility the mess is.
